“Her mother had once told her that some people you meet are meant to be a part of your world forever, but some are meant only to change the course of your life and then move on.”
"The Room on Rue Amelie", tells the story of an American woman named Ruby, a British RAF pilot named Thomas, and a young Jewish teenager named Charlotte, whose lives intersect in occupied Paris during the many harsh days of World War II. It's a story about bravery, hope, and loving one another regardless of titles.
I don't know if World War II is just a favorite topic of historical fiction or if I am always just drawn to it, because there seems to be thousands, but I thought going into this one I would find that I would at least enjoy it, (because I've read so many stories centered around this time in history and surely I would get tired of it) but alas I'm not and for whatever reason most books that I have read have brought out something different and "The Room on Rue Amelie" was no exception!
What makes Harmel's novel stand out is that it is more of a romance than a heavily written account. I'm not always one who loves a heavily romantic book, but I LOVED this one! It's such a sweet story and I found the ending to be perfect. It was definitely one that was hard to put down! The characters just become so real and you feel for each and every one of them.
I think the idea that sums up the book entirely is...that the smallest acts of courage are the ones that change the world. That's a pretty incredible sentence if you really think about it, and in relation to the story it makes you think what kind of person would you be in these peoples situations. Would you stand up for what is right even if it meant that you may die? Ruby is one to aspire too and a character that I'm sure is based off many real women who chose to help others regardless of the severe and fearful consequences. This is just an incredible book! Can't recommend it enough!
“But if we want to defeat darkness, we must find our own way to the light. We have to follow our hearts and accept the danger."
