⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars.

"Marsh is not swamp. Marsh is a space of light, where grass grows in water, and water flows into the sky. Slow-moving creeks wander, carrying the orb of the sun with them to the sea, and long-legged birds lift with unexpected grace--- as though not built to fly--- against the roar of a thousand snow geese."

Delia Owens has written, "Where the Crawdads Sing" in such a beautiful way. There were several phrases in here that I wanted to write down and keep forever. It's a story about living solely in nature and truly being "wild" at heart. It's honestly hard to summarize. It's a love story, a murder mystery, a court room drama, and an ode to the outdoors. A young girl, Kya, whose mother has abandoned their family, as well as her siblings and whose father is emotionally absent from her life, takes to the woods by herself and goes as far as she can into nature. She takes the one advice from her mother which is go as far as you can until you are able to listen to the crawdads sing. Through this, Owens explores the idea of what loneliness and isolation can have on a person and how the wild can be a teacher in love and in loss.

Overall, this book was wonderful! Here and there I felt like some parts were not needed. I didn't particularly care for the love stories and would have preferred a strong friendship instead. That being said though, this book is just as good as everyone says it is. It's message and gorgeous words will leave you thinking about it long after and wanting to discuss with all your reader friends!
