Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars!!

“Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance”, tells the story of Weylyn Grey’s life from the perspectives of the people who knew him, loved him, and even a few who thought he was just plain weird. Although he doesn’t stay in any of their lives for long, he leaves each of them with a story to tell. Stories about a boy who lives with wolves, great storms that evaporate into thin air, fireflies that make phosphorescent honey, and a house filled with spider webs and the strange man who inhabits it.

When turning the last page I immediately came to the conclusion that this is such a special book! It’s the kind of story I wish I would have thought of myself to write. It’s so well thought out and each part is written with care and beauty!

I absolutely love stories that are set in a forest and have an atmospheric setting! Even though I loved the setting, I think what I found to be the most interesting is that the overall format of this book could be anyone’s life story. Everyone has a list of people who has made them who they are today; some significant, some only pass through at the right time in your life. Weylyn’s story though obviously more magical than reality, glimpses at a cast of characters starting with an OB/GYN and continues on with people who have helped him and in return who he has helped as well.

I always try to compare a few other stories to help interested readers see if it’s something they may like, but honestly this is in a league of its own. IF I had to pick something, I would say it did remind me slightly of the movie, “Big Fish”. Because it’s a story where the protagonist leaves a lasting impression not only on the people in the story, but also on the reader; because we, like Weylyn have felt: different, afraid, brave and loved.

Overall, Ruth Emmie Lang’s debut is an incredible gift to storytelling. I love the blurb on the book from Winston Groom (author of Forest Gump), he says...

“Lang’s prose has the earthy warmth of a campfire story, best enjoyed in the woods and under the stars. It bristles with charm and curiosity, and it’s oddball hero, Weylyn Grey, will make you want to follow him into the forest.”

I now have a new favorite author to watch out for!
