“For almost four years, men came to my cabin carrying trouble on their backs, each one haunted and looking over his shoulder…They showed up during the spring, they appeared in the summer and early fall. But never now, never in January...”
In a small town called Junction, Utah, Sister Deborah awaits her husband‘s return home, when a stranger arrives at her doorstep for help. With her husband’s absence felt more strongly by the minute, Deborah must make a decision, one that could change her life immensely. Should she just let the man go on or should she abide by her Mormon faith and possibly be of some help?
What I most enjoyed about this story was the time period and setting. The time is 1888 and I loved learning more about how people lived and survived, especially during the winter. It paints an eerie landscape and gave me Hannah Kent vibes! I also found learning more about the Ladder Day Saints intriguing. Their way of life is a little crazy, but I think combining that with the time in history really made for a great backdrop.
I found the the overall mystery/thriller parts to be just okay though. I think there were too many times where the author kept repeating the same situation over and over. By the middle of the book I was like...”yes I know Deborah has a conscience, but can we please move on from her letting this man into her house.”
I did however, like the ending and I think there were many positives to this book that should not be overlooked! If you like historical eerie fiction give The Glovemaker a try!
