Ah! What a wonderful immersive story! This is why I love historical fiction!
Told in two different time periods, a century apart, “The Lighthouse Keepers Daughter”, starts in 1838 England where Grace Darling lives a quiet life at Longstone Lighthouse. Based on true events of the actual Grace Darling whose bravery in rescuing survivors of a shipwreck leads her to a life of unwanted fame. Jumping to 1938 Rhode Island, Matilda arrives in America from Ireland to stay with a relative, Harriet Flaherty who is a keeper at Rose Island Lighthouse. Matilda is four months pregnant and is being sent away until the baby is born. Little does she know that what she discovers about her family history will reveal to her a Victorian heroine named Grace Darling.
Every time I pick up an historical fiction novel and see that there is a duel time period I get super excited! You would think it would get repetitive, but so far I really believe this is how historical stories should be told!
This book was so atmospheric! I loved learning about the process and daily routines of lighthouse keepers! This story was extra fascinating, because it centered on women light keepers. I didn’t realize just how important of a job and diligent you have to be when owning a lighthouse. It’s makes sense though because they were the heroes of the sea.
Seriously, this was a very good book. I urge you to read this and also check out other books by Gaynor. I’ve now read two from her and have loved both! She depicts such interesting people and times in history that I didn’t even fully know I was interested in until I read her stories!
