The Simple Wild Review

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars.

“What hold does Alaksa have on them? What makes this place worth giving everything else up?”

”The Simple Wild”, is about a girl named Calla who gets a phone call one day saying her father has lung cancer and doesn’t have that much time to live. This is the same father who abandoned her to live in the Alaskan bush to keep his airport business going; but is now asking to see her to try and make amends. With similar prose as authors like Nichlolas Sparks and Morgan Matson; Tucker takes you on a heartfelt journey to a place that many would not up and volunteer to live, let alone visit.

Honestly, I really did like several things about this book. I liked that I could see everything as if I was watching a movie. I liked that it was a light and fun read with a pretty good story. Though it had sad elements, it didn’t overshadow the book, which was nice. I liked the setting, the small business kind of life, the characters, and the photography side of travel; all was really great.

BUT. I knew going into this in was “new adult“ and that is one genre I’m not interested in at all. I think the back story and the setting did help though and I can see why people like this book. For me, I would say if Tucker could have focused more on the family aspects or the scenery Alaska has to offer, it would have made a world of difference for my overall rating. However, (I mean I was warned by the genre) it did focus on sex and other crude and uncalled for moments. I think books like, “The Last Song“ or “Second Chance Summer”, (both have very similar storylines to this book) did a much better job telling more of a heartfelt story.

But like I said, this story wasn’t all bad! I did enjoy several things about it. I just wish it wasn’t so heavily focused on certain topics.

“And just like that, I sense a circle closing. Back to the beginning, and near to the end.”
